A Navy press release on the change of guard is as below:
A ceremonial parade was held at the Indian Navy’s recently commissioned helicopter base ‘INS Shikra’ to welcome Vice Admiral Sanjeev Bhasin and bid farewell to Vice Admiral JS Bedi. Commander Gurcharan Singh commanded the parade comprising of 24 platoons including 8 armed platoons along with a 50-man Guard of Honour and the Naval Band. The President’s Colour was also paraded during the ceremonial occasion in keeping with naval traditions.
During his 40 years of naval service, Vice Admiral JS Bedi had the distinction of commanding a naval ship in every rank. He has had close association with the Western Naval Command where he had served as the Chief of Staff, Fleet Commander of the Western Fleet and finally as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief from where he relinquished office on retirement from the Indian Navy. At the parade today he received the salute as the platoons marched in Review order. VAdm Bedi also addressed the gathering.
Vice Admiral Sanjeev Bhasin, an aluminus of the National Defence Academy, was commissioned into the Executive branch of the Indian Navy in Jan 1972 and specialised in Navigation and Aircraft Direction. He has the unique distinction of commissioning two ships as the Commanding Officer - the missile corvette INS Khukri and the guided missile destroyer INS Mumbai besides commanding the missile destroyer INS Ranjit. In the rank of Rear Admiral, he has served as the Chief of Staff of Western Naval Command and was the Fleet Commander of the Eastern Fleet. On promotion to the rank of Vice Admiral, he was appointed as Deputy Chief Integrated Defence Staff at HQ Integrated Defence Staff (HQIDS) and has also headed the National Defence College as its Commandant. Prior to taking up his present appointment as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the prestigious Western Naval Command, VAdm Bhasin was Officer on Special Duties to the Chief of Naval Staff at Delhi. He is a graduate of Naval War College (USA) and College of Naval Warfare (Mumbai). VAdm Bhasin is a recipient of the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM).
